Chile’s Congressional Health Committeeto approve a bill that would legalize recreational cannabis for everyone 18 and older, and allow those under 18 to use and possess cannabis for medical purposes.
The proposal, which now moves to the full Chamber of Deputies, would legalize the private cultivation of up to six cannabis plants for those 18 and older. Consuming cannabis in public would remain illegal, and when not in a private residence no more than 10 grams could be in a person’s possession at any given time.
The bill also allows those under 18 to use cannabis if part of a physician-prescribed treatment program.
If passed by the Chamber of Deputies, the measure will be sent to the nation’s Senate for consideration.
