PIERRE, S.D. (AP) One of the organizers of a South Dakota petition drive that seeks to legalize marijuana for medical purposes has a personal reason for being involved.
Nineteen-year-old Emmett Reistroffer (RYS’-trah-fur) of Sioux Falls says his mother has lupus, and marijuana is the only thing that alleviates the swelling in her joints.
Reistroffer graduated from his school last year, and intends to work full-time on the ballot campaign until he enters college this fall. He also plans to take a semester off in the fall of 2010 to work in the campaign before the election.
Supporters need 16,776 valid signatures to put the measure on the 2010 ballot for a statewide public vote. Reistroffer says he hopes organizers get enough signatures in just a few months.
