Yucaipa city council adopted an ordinance prohibiting the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city of Yucaipa. The permanent ordinance came after the temporary ban expired.
The ordinance, which will go into effect 30 days from the Sept. 14 meeting, received a 3 to 0 vote with no council discussion and Mayor Pro-tem Allan Drusys and Tom Masner absent. Some residents anticipated a crowd to attend the meeting to demonstrate their objection to this prohibition however, there was no public comment.
Calimesa is one of several neighboring city’s ready to tackle the same issue. In fact, a company South Coast Patients Collective Association has already expressed interest to the council and Planning Commission in establishing a dispensary in Calimesa.
City staff can take the same action as Yucaipa or alternatives chosen by Loma Linda and Beaumont to establish a 45-day moratorium on dispensaries, which can be extended for up to two years while Federal law regarding the issue is conclusive. The cities can also opt for an amendment to the municipal code to allow the establishment of dispensaries.
