Terrified family had to flee over threats from criminal gang
ONE of the country's most dangerous criminal gangs forced a family to flee their home , assaulted a 10-year-old child and warned them they would take the life of another unless the family repaid more than double the value of a drugs debt.
A stunned court heard of the threats that the relatives of a young 22-year-old had to endure after he was
caught with almost €2,700 worth of cannabis earlier this year.
The family of Daniel Corbett from McDonagh Avenue, Janeboro, Limerick, had to secure a credit union loan worth €6,000 and hand it over to the gang after suffering a terrifying and violent ordeal.
Corbett, who pleaded guilty, was stopped by gardai driving a car in the city on March 4 last. Officers searched the vehicle and cannabis herb worth €2,688 was found.
Judge Tom O'Donnell said he found it "absolutely and utterly appalling that a family should be subjected to this".
Sentencing was adjourned until January.
